Chapter 1: New in Town
"ORDER UP!!!" shouted an overly-bubbly young sponge, handing a Krabby Patty to the six-legged octopus at the cashier, who was covering his ears with the latest edition of Frown Digest. "Made with love for the customer."
Squidward growled and took the heart attack on a bun from him. "Made with love for the customer," he said in a mock voice. "Hmph."
"What was that, Squidward?"
"Go crawl in a hole." Squidward ignored the glare the customer sent him as he gave him the patty and returned to his magazine.
"Squidward! You should never insult the customer like that!" Spongebob gasped.
"I was talking to you, sod for brains!"
The cycle was the same every day. Squidward came to work, got yelled at by Mr. Krabs for being late, stood at the cash register, rolled his eyes, handed patties to the "Rustomers" (as he called them), waited for Spongebob to mess up, groan at how ridiculous his job and his life was, count down the seconds until eight o'clock, go home, take a bubble bath, go to bed, repeat. When would something exiting happen???
Right about then, the doors burst open, followed by "Hey, Spongebob!!! You ready to par-tay tonight?"
"I'm ready to par-tay tonight!!!" Spongebob replied.
"I'm readier to par-tay tonight!!!" Patrick yelled back.
"I'm readiest to par-tay tonight!!!"
Oh, yeah. This happened a lot, too.
"WILL YOU TWO SHUT UP?!" Squidward shouted, throwing his magazine down. What was the point of coming to work if he couldn't even read in peace? Oh, well. He had to find some way to pay for his clarinet.
For the remainder of the day, Spongebob and Patrick stayed in the kitchen planning their big night with their gal-pals, Sandy and Mindy. Squidward tried to drown out the sound of their idiocy (to no avail, of course). Finally, five fifty-five rolled around, and Squidward started counting down. Three-hundred, two-hunded ninetey-nine, two-hundred ninety-eight, two-hundred ninety--
"Excuse me, can you help me?"
Squidward growled and put down his magazine. "Ma'am, what could be so important that you have to interrupt me five minutes before closing?! Can't you see I--" Then he saw who it was. She was a mermaid; A beautiful mermaid with a purple tail and lilac skin to match, long, black hair that reached to her lower back, and sparkling indigo eyes. She wore a classic clam-shell bra (which was also in purple- That was her favorite color, Squidward concluded).
She grinned shyly and him and put her hands behind her back. "I'm so sorry to disturb you, mister..." She looked closely at his name tag. "...Mister I Really Wish I Weren't Here Right Now, but I--"
"Squidward," he corrected. "It's Squidward. That's just my daily motivational button."
"...Okay... Squidward. I need some help. You see, I'm trying to get to Coral City, but I got caught in a whirlpool along the way, and I don't know where I am. Do you think you can direct me to Coral City?"
Squidward paused and looked her over. Dang, she was pretty! "Never heard of the place. All I know is that you're pretty unfortunate to end up in a place like Bikini Bottom."
Her face fell, then she looked back up at him. "Bikini Bottom, hmm? Interesting name... By the way, I'm Shannon." She stuck out her hand. "Nice to meet you, Squidward."
Squidward stared at her hand for a while, trying to decide if he should trust her or not, then he extended his tentacle and shook her hand. "You... Too."
"Do you know some place I could stay, like a motel or something?"
"You could stay with me!" The two turned to see Mindy swim into the Krusty Krab, a sincere smile on her face. "I came here to meet up with Patrick, Sandy, and Spongebob for our movie tonight, and I over heard your story. I'm sure Daddy would let a meek pheasant stay with us until she finds a place to stay permanently. What do you say?"
Shannon thought for a moment, then smiled. "Sure! Thank you so much! Just let me go get my bags from the parking lot."
Squidward watched as she swam away, unable to stop staring. She really was pretty for a mermaid. Very pretty. So pretty, in fact, that it took him a moment to realize just what he was saying about her...
He slapped himself upside the head. What are you thinking??? Get a grip! She's just a... She-male!!! She's not worth your time. He rolled his eyes and returned to his magazine, but he couldn't help but take one last glance at Shannon as she left with Mindy.
She's not worth your time.
