So, I thought to myself, "Okay. The writers did a pitiful job with their last film (Atlantis SquarePantis). But the reviews have come in, time has passed, and they have surely been able to come up with a story that would make up for all of the garbage in the last film."
When the ads came up about this new movie, they all seemed promising. Maybe the writers saw what piles of garbage the last film was and decided to write a good one this time. Although I didn't get to see the full movie until I bought the DVD, I did read the reviews on TV.com. And based on what I read, I was sure I was in for something terrible. Putting aside what I read that day, on November 10, 2009 I bought the DVD and turned on my portable DVD player with a lot of optimism. And once again, my hopes for seeing a good film were quickly crushed, and this time, my faith in the writers, was reduced to absolute zero.
When I had finished watching the movie, all I wanted were answers. And not just answers to the questions I had about the movie. Answers to the one main question I had going through my mind: "How could something like this happen?"
The following week, I read the final ratings on what this movie had: 7.4. This reminded me about the ratings of "Atlantis SquarePantis." That film was hailed as a terrible piece of entertainment. I am just as flabbergasted by the overwhelmingly positive reception of "Truth or Square" as I was the somewhat negative reception of "Atlantis SquarePantis." There is no need to like "Truth or Square" and not like "Atlantis SquarePantis." It had just too many issues that needed to be dealt with. I say of this film what I usually said of "Atlantis SquarePantis:" THIS WAS JUST AS BAD AS THE LAST FILM!!! JUST AS BAD!!!
The only difference between this and the previous film, was that this has information crammed in that isn't necessary, and this wasn't a musical. In fact, when you put aside the fact that this wasn't a musical, this movie makes "Atlantis SquarePantis" look like one of SpongeBob's best episodes ever to air on television.
Allow me to back-track for a moment and to just recap the criticisms of "Atlantis SquarePantis." The criticisms of "A.S." centered around the Patchy segments being repetetive and lacking story, which is no different than "T. or S." The story was lacking excitement and entertainment, which is no different than "T. or S." The bad and corny jokes all over "A.S.," which is no different than "T. or S." And the climax being terrible and the worst thing you've ever seen, which is no different than "T. or S."
Anyway, about "Truth or Square," well. All I really have to say was that it was the worst piece of entertainment that made Atlantis SquarePantis look like one of the best episodes to ever be shown on television. The title itself, is false advertising. They may have as well called this movie "Stuck in the Tunnels." Literally, no secrets or "shocking reveals" were even revealed. About the closest we get to a shocking reveal is SpongeBob in some way admitting his love for Sandy. Yes I understand there are portions of the Krusty Krab that we have never heard of before, but it's so blank and minor that it hardly matters.
Now, this is only some of what I have to say about this movie, personally, so you should watch my sneak peek review of the movie on YouTube for a little more detail. The link is at the bottom of this post. We are now hearing rumors of a 4th TV movie in the works, and my only piece of advice to people creating that movie: WRITE IT!!!
