I understand a lot of you are upset over the fact that SpongeBob and Sandy's marriage was a "play." Well personally, I don't think that is entirely true. Throughout that scene, I was asking myself the biggest question I had in mind: "How could people not notice this?" One of the things that was brought up after Truth or Square was the fact that SpongeBob and Sandy's marriage was a play. WRONG!
Watch this scene carefully again, and pay attention to what is going on.

I'm not sure about most of you, but I noticed crucial points in this scene that contradict the fact that this was a play. But to make it simple, I created a list of what happened.
[li] For starters, SpongeBob stated, and I quote, "Remember the day Sandy and I got married?" This flat-out states that SpongeBob and Sandy got married.
[/li][li] Right after Mr. Krabs' and an unknown character's remarks on how this was a play, we cut to the entrance/exit where there is a sign right above the entry that reads in huge bold letters: "TONIGHT ONLY: THE MARRIAGE OF SPONGEBOB." I'm not sure about the rest of you guys, since the main statement that would come to defend this as a play would be, "SpongeBob didn't get married. Both Mr. Krabs and the unknown fish said so." Well, once again, you would be wrong. The sign clearly state that "Tonight" was the ONLY night that SpongeBob would get married. If everything were to work out properly in a marriage, there would be no need for SpongeBob to re-marry.
[/li][li] And finally, I would like to add the cliché to this scene with the quote coming directly from the priest, "I didn't know this was a play." This quote could have many meanings, but the meaning I have come to accept is this theory I have put together. SpongeBob and Sandy have been going out for sometime now, outside of the camera, and finally want to be together. They know, however, that people under the sea wouldn't come to accept two different worlds to coexist with each other in the form of a life-long commitment, as indicated by Squidward, Patrick and Mr. Krabs' reactions to SpongeBob claiming he was married to Sandy. So in a carefully convoluted plan, they come up with this: Both SpongeBob and Sandy will plan out their wedding in the form of a play so that it would still seem authentic and both know that they can't get married if they can't get a priest to do the honors, so they hire the only one in town that tolerates the bonding of both worlds and claim that they are getting married in front of the entire town. The priest goes along with this and the marriage takes place. After an incident with the structural building of the lights, they collapse, and everyone claims that the marriage was "the worst play they have ever seen." This leaves the priest baffled and confused with the same thought going through his mind. "Is this a play or is this a real wedding?" This was well convoluted because both SpongeBob and Sandy knew that even if something goes wrong, they would still be married.

Okay. So let's recap. We've got SpongeBob claiming he and Sandy got married. We've got the huge sign hanging over the so-called "theater" that states this is the only night that SpongeBob will ever get married, especially considering it is best for you to marry someone if you truely and dearly love them. And finally, we have the priest who claims he never thought the whole thing was a play.
Okay. That's more than enough evidence to conclude that this so-called "play" was actually a convoluted plan by SpongeBob and Sandy to get married without anyone ever suspecting the whole thing was actually real. Either the writers didn't mean for this message to be sent out, or they thought no one would notice. I'm pretty sure most of you would favor the first theory over the second one, but I stand by what I just stated in this discussion. I believe SpongeBob and Sandy actually did get married. The writers are just now trying to make sure this isn't incorperated into future episodes, and hoping that the audience has forgotten about what happened in Truth or Square.
I'm not sure what you guys think or believe, but that's up to you guys. I am simply responding to the arguments of whether or not the marriage of SpongeBob and Sandy was actually real.
Thank you for reading. Have a good day.
